Robert J. Chappell received his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University in 1995. He is admitted to practice law in the State of New York, as well as the Federal Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Prior to joining ARFD, Mr. Chappell was a Senior Assistant District Attorney (ADA) with the Kings County District Attorney's Office where he was the lead trial attorney on numerous criminal prosecutions, including homicide trials. As an ADA, Mr. Chappell was the first attorney in the State of New York to litigate and try a case following the seminal case of People v. Lee, which addressed the evidentiary value and use of eyewitness identification in criminal prosecutions. As a result, Mr. Chappell is noted in People v. Trinidad as the first trial attorney to challenge the application of the Court of Appeals ruling allowing expert witness testimony relating to eyewitness identification.
Since joining ARFD in 2003, Mr. Chappell has been dedicated to the defense of complex, high exposure medical malpractice matters on behalf of several New York area hospital systems and medical practices. Additionally, he handles general liability, personal injury and real estate transactional matters.
